Do You Really Need All Those Skincare Products?
How to Build a Simple Routine That Works for You
If your bathroom counter is starting to look like the skincare aisle at a department store, we need to talk. Somewhere along the way, taking care of our skin became complicated. Cleanser. Toner. Essence. Serum. Another serum. Eye cream. Facial oil. Exfoliant. Retinol. Moisturizer. Sleeping mask. And whatever that adorable little bottle was that somebody on Facebook convinced us we absolutely needed. Before you know it, we're standing in front of the bathroom mirror wondering which one goes first.
Here's the good news: Your skincare routine does not have to be complicated to be effective. In fact, one of the things I want to do with Beyond Skin Deep is help take some of the confusion out of skincare. Because aging well isn't about having the most products. It's about taking good care of the skin you have—and doing it consistently.
Start With the Basics
If we strip skincare down to its foundation, most routines can begin with just a few important steps:
Cleanse → Treat → Moisturize → Protect
That's it.
Everything else should have a reason for being there.
1. Cleanse
Let's start with the obvious one. Your skin needs to be clean before you put anything else on it. A good cleanser removes makeup, sunscreen, excess oil and the dirt and debris that accumulate throughout the day without leaving your skin feeling stripped or uncomfortably tight. And no, your face doesn't need to feel squeaky clean. If your skin feels like it has suddenly become two sizes too small after washing it, your cleanser may be a little too aggressive for you. Your skin should feel clean and comfortable.
2. Treat
This is where skincare can start getting confusing because there are so many choices. Serums and treatment products are generally where we target a particular concern. Maybe you're looking for more hydration. Maybe you're concerned about uneven tone or texture. Maybe you're incorporating peptides, vitamin C, retinoids or exfoliating acids into your routine. The important question isn't: “How many serums can I fit on my face?” It's: “What am I trying to accomplish?”
Choose products that have a purpose in your routine. You don't need to use every popular ingredient simply because everyone else is talking about it.
3. Moisturize
I sometimes think moisturizer doesn't get enough attention because it isn't the most exciting step.
But it's an important one. A moisturizer helps support the skin barrier and helps keep moisture in the skin. And moisturizer isn't only for people with dry skin. The product you choose may be lighter or richer depending on your skin type, the season and what your skin needs, but hydration and barrier support belong in a well-rounded skincare routine.
4. Protect
If it's daytime, there's one more very important step: Sunscreen. You can invest in wonderful serums, moisturizers and treatments, but protecting your skin from UV exposure remains one of the most important things you can do for your skin. And sunscreen isn't just for July. Your skin doesn't look at the calendar and say, “Oh, it's October. We're good.” UV exposure happens year-round. So your morning routine might be as simple as: Cleanse → Treatment/Serum → Moisturizer → SPF
Your evening routine might be: Cleanse → Treatment → Moisturizer
Suddenly skincare doesn't seem quite so intimidating.
But What About Toner, Eye Cream, Exfoliants and Everything Else?
They aren't necessarily bad or unnecessary. I use and recommend additional products, too. The difference is that they should earn their place in your routine. That's a phrase you'll probably hear from me often on Beyond Skin Deep. If you love toner and it works beautifully for your skin, use it. If an eye product addresses something you're concerned about, wonderful. If exfoliation helps your skin look and feel its best, it may have a place in your routine. If a facial oil gives your dry skin the extra nourishment it needs, great. But adding another product simply because someone told you that everyone over 40—or 50, or 60—must use it isn't a good enough reason for me. Your skin isn't everyone else's skin.
More Isn't Always Better
This is especially important when we're talking about active ingredients. It's easy to think: If one exfoliating product is good, three must be amazing. Your skin may disagree. Using too many strong products at once can contribute to irritation, dryness and a compromised skin barrier. This is one reason I prefer introducing products thoughtfully instead of completely changing a routine overnight. Give your skin a chance to tell you what it thinks. And if something is working? You don't have to replace it because the internet discovered something shinier this week.
Where Does Facial Massage Fit?
This is where my experience as a Honey Face Lift Massage Specialist influences the way I think about skincare. I don't think applying skincare should always be something we rush through. Sometimes your routine can also be a little moment of self-care. When appropriate for the product you're using, slow down. Apply it gently. Take a few moments to massage your face, neck and décolleté rather than hurriedly rubbing something on and moving to the next step. That doesn't turn your moisturizer into a miracle cream. It simply turns an everyday routine into an opportunity to slow down and care for yourself. And I think there's value in that.
Healthy Skin Isn't a Competition
This may be the most important part. We are constantly being shown flawless faces. Perfectly smooth skin. No pores. No lines. No texture. That's not a realistic standard for human skin. Skin has texture. Skin changes. Skin ages. My goal isn't to convince you that aging is something you need to fix. I would much rather help you care for your skin so it feels comfortable, healthy and cared for through every stage of life. That's why the philosophy behind Beyond Skin Deep is: Aging Well Instead of Chasing Perfect.
Those few words really sum up how I feel about skincare. I want to take care of myself. I want to use good products. I want to protect my skin. I want to make healthy choices. And yes, I want my skin to look its best. But I'm not interested in spending the rest of my life chasing an impossible version of perfect.
Before You Buy Another Product...
Take a look at what's already sitting on your bathroom counter. Ask yourself:
What does this product do?
Why am I using it?
Where does it belong in my routine?
Is it addressing something I actually care about?
And am I using it consistently enough to know whether it's working for me?
If you can't answer those questions, you may not need another product. You may just need a simpler plan. And if your bathroom cabinet is currently holding 47 half-used bottles, three facial oils you forgot you owned, and a serum you're pretty sure you bought sometime during the pandemic...Well...You don't need a 17-step skincare routine.
Your bathroom counter may just need an intervention. 😉
Here's to simpler skincare, healthy habits, and taking good care of the skin we're in.
